Cowbell is based on a 2000 Saturday Night Live skit featuring Will Ferrell and Christopher Walken. In the skit, Ferrell plays Gene Frankel, a fictional member of the band Blue Öyster Cult, and Walken plays Bruce Dickinson, a producer. The most famous line of the skit is when Dickinson gives a pep-talk to Frankel, telling him, "Well, guess what! I've got a fever, and the only prescription is more cowbell!"
The first Cowbell site was made by Discharger in May of 2004; it merely featured an image and sound of a cowbell with the text "NEEDS MORE COWBELL". Blue Öyster Cult's "Don't Fear The Reaper" was not used until two days later, in skwirl's site Cowbell Fever. Many sites included a bell, but sometimes YTMNDs may contain someone hitting something else. Still other sites involve mixing a cowbell track or Walken's lines with other songs.
